Company History

When Mr. John C. Senter decided to open his construction firm in the back room of his Roanoke home in 1922, little did he realize the future that lay ahead for his organization. Mr. Senter soon earned the community's trust as a highly respected builder of commercial and industrial construction projects. He was instrumental in the early development of the Roanoke Airport as well as a number of Roanoke area landmarks which remain today.

Following the end of World War II, Senter's nephew, S. Lewis Lionberger joined the firm and assumed its management in 1950. He changed the name to S. Lewis Lionberger Company. Lewis Lionberger's unbending sense of integrity and forthright dealings enhanced the already fine reputation of the Company.
 
Sam Lionberger Jr. joined the firm in 1964, following his graduation from Virginia Tech, and a tour with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The years following were an exciting time as Sam led the firm into Fast-Track and Design/Build forms of construction and realized the significant potential of this method of building.

In 1974, Lewis Lionberger retired and Sam Lionberger became President of the Company. Lionberger Construction Company became known as a leading builder in Southwestern and   Central Virginia as Sam continued the Legacy of Quality started by his father.

Sam Lionberger III began his career with the Company in 1988, bringing another generation of new ideas and enthusiasm into the ever changing and developing construction industry.
